A Different Kind of Learning Experience

We create learning experiences that support students academically, emotionally, and creatively—so they can grow with confidence and purpose.

Hi, I’m Dr. Yolanda Peay.

I am a certified educator, author, and school district leader with a deep passion for social-emotional learning and its impact on student success.

With over 25 years of experience supporting students, families, and schools, my work has always been grounded in one core belief: students thrive when they feel seen, supported, and valued.

Throughout my career, I have worked to create learning environments that strengthen relationships, build confidence, and support the whole child academically, socially, emotionally, and creatively.

I believe students deserve learning experiences that encourage them to think critically, use their voice, lean into their talents, and grow into confident leaders.

Maya Angelou School of the Arts was created to reflect that vision and provide students with a learning environment where they are empowered to grow, create, and lead with purpose.

Relationships Over Control

Students thrive in environments built on trust, connection, and meaningful relationships.

What We Believe

Growth Over Perfection

We believe mistakes are part of learning, growth, and becoming confident learners.

Support Over Punishment

Students deserve guidance, understanding, and support that helps them grow emotionally and academically.

Whole-Child Development Over Test-Only Outcomes

Education should nurture emotional growth, creativity, leadership, and critical thinking—not just academic performance.

The foundation of Maya Angelou School of the Arts is rooted in relationships, support, growth, and the belief that every child deserves to feel valued and empowered.

Let’s Start the Conversation

What I Want for Every Student.

What I Want for Every Student.

I want students to feel safe being themselves. I want them to develop confidence in their abilities, learn how to communicate with purpose, and discover that their voice matters.

I want students to be challenged academically while also being supported emotionally. I want them to grow not only as learners, but as leaders, creators, and critical thinkers.

Most importantly, I want students to know they are capable.
